#13. FAIR TAXATION: Multinational corporations are allowed fair access to our Vermont marketplace and they are here to make money, to profit from selling food and fuel (#2 – FOOD and #3 – FUEL, for example, with Hannafords, Irving Oil, and Green Mountain Power as examples) and other goods & services to Vermonters. It is unlikely, however, that the multinational corporations pay their fair share of income taxes because of the water’s edge tax loophole in Act 152 (H.784) that was passed by our legislature in 2004. This tax loophole allows multinationals to shift pre-tax profits to foreign tax havens. (To see how they do this, watch The Town That Took On The Taxman and Taxodus on YouTube). The solution is the worldwide combined method that the US Supreme Court has approved three times. This method treats ALL corporations – multinational, national, regional, and smaller corporations the same – regardless of size or nationality.
