Environmentalist, 350.org founder, and author Bill McKibben has been awarded the “2VR – Vermont Secessionist of the Year – 2018” award from Vermont Independent news journal. His new novel, RADIO FREE VERMONT: A FABLE OF VERMONT RESISTANCE, fictionalizes the quest for Vermont’s nonviolent secession from the United States of Empire, explores how Vermonters might create a 2nd Vermont Republic (2VR), and celebrates Vermont unique virtues, including its deliciously decentralized craft beer movement right here in the Green Mountains.
“RADIO FREE VERMONT is a tale that fictionalizes many of our best decentralist ideas surrounding the creation of a 2nd Vermont Republic (2VR), popularizing them for a wider audience,” explains Vermont Independent publisher Rob Williams. “This is a brand-new annual award for us, and our friend and neighbor Bill McKibben has done our fifteen years of hard work exploring a 2nd Vermont Republic (2VR) a tremendous service by publishing his novel.”
“Having an author of Mr. McKibben’s stature treat our ideas seriously demonstrates (as we’ve known all along) that our decentralist work represents a substantive diagnosis of our political, economic, and environmental crises,” explains Ron Miller, co-editor with Williams of Most Likely to Secede. “In his novel, Mr. McKibben seems to acknowledge that the dominant system – the U.S. as Empire – is inherently hostile to the ecological wisdom he has so heroically championed, and that we need a more democratic, decentralized alternative to that system – a 2nd Vermont Republic.”
In honor of Mr. McKibben’s novel RADIO FREE VERMONT, Vermont Independent has presented him with a complete 2nd Vermont Republic (2VR) welcome package, including 1) a copy of Vermont Independence Press’s 2012 book MOST LIKELY TO SECEDE, 2) a Plan V – Towards a 2nd Vermont Republic pamphlet, 3) a 2VR tee shirt, 4) a 2VR winter knit cap (for long Nordic ski sessions in the woods, per his novel), 5) a 2VR sticker, and 6) a commemorative Republic of Vermont passport.
