Publisher’s note: If ever it was time to invest in Vermont’s local food systems, that time is now. See the call to action below from our Vermont neighbor Peter Forbes, NOFA-VT board president. More here at NOFA-VT’s web site.
Dear Friend of NOFA-VT, This COVID-19 crisis has highlighted the cracks and inequities in the industrial food system—but it is also bringing a greater understanding that there is a better way. NOFA-VT is building bridges from the world as it was, towards the world we need. Another food system is possible, and many of us have been working together towards this shared vision for years. Now is the time to invest—through our choices, actions, and financial support—in resilience, in connection, in the future. Your donation to the NOFA-VT COVID Response Fund will support these programs and others: Resilience Gardens – supporting over 1,700 food insecure families with 40,000 seed packets to add to their food security and that of their neighbors Farmer COVID Resiliency Grants – providing emergency funds to help farmers mitigate the impact of the COVID pandemic as they pivot their operations and respond to the unexpected changes brought about by this crisis Farmer Emergency Fund – helping organic and NOFA-VT member farmers who have been adversely affected by natural and unnatural disasters, such as crop failure, extreme weather, flooding, fire, barn collapse, and financial hardship as the price of organic milk continues to drop Dairy Milking Relief Fund – covering the cost of relief milkers for dairy farm owners or sick pay for farmworkers in the event they fall ill, while ensuring that necessary dairy operations continue as normal. Feeding Those who Feed Us – providing nourishment and gratitude for farmers and food providers around the state through our mobile pizza oven. Farm Share Program – matching low-income Vermonters with subsidized CSA shares at local Vermont farms, always has more demand than funds. In this time of isolation, I would feel even more isolated from real solutions and from my fellow farmers without NOFA-VT. NOFA-VT is putting forward real help and practical solutions when we need them the most. Money is tight for sure, but I’m writing a check today for NOFA-VT because I recognize it to be an essential voice for the way forward for our farm, for our fellow farmers, and for our state. With gratitude, Peter Forbes NOFA-VT Board President |
